Stansted Mountfitchet trip ideas
While better known for the nearby airport of the same name, Stansted Mountfitchet is a market town that’s been around far longer than any planes. Its history dates back to Norman times, and visitors to the little Essex town today can get the lowdown on its past at Mountfitchet Castle, a replica motte-and-bailey castle built on the site of an original Norman fortification. Visits to a historic windmill, a toy museum, churches, and shops are among the other things to do in Stansted Mountfitchet.
Weather-wise, Stansted Mountfitchet is fairly typical of most landlocked English towns, with mild summers and wet winters. While it rarely feels busy with visitors, you can expect higher accommodation prices in the summer months, near Christmas, or around the English school holiday dates, when travelers are more likely to stay in the town before or after a flight from London Stansted Airport.
Stansted Mountfitchet is small and compact. The shops, restaurants, pubs, and sites of interest can all be reached on foot from the train station. If you’re driving in, you can find parking easily around town, with parking lots located at the train station and on Church Road; both of these require payment. Otherwise, local buses, taxis, and rideshare options are all available.
Often overlooked by visitors to the town, the Stansted Mountfitchet Windmill is a handsome example of an old, wind-powered corn mill, which is thought to have been built more than two centuries ago. It’s open to the public on the first Sunday afternoon of each month between Easter and October, with a small admission fee to pay. Note that access to the higher floors of the windmill is via ladders.
